Awards and Nominations – Oooh, Shiny!

Below is a listing by year of awards Mitchell Davidson Bentley has won at general or literary science fiction and fantasy conventions (cons). Not all cons give out art awards, and the types of awards vary widely from popular attendee vote to committees of guests, panel participants or single judges. The categories vary just as much.
Most of the awards have notes of which piece won, some are more general awards like "Favorite New Artist" or "Best Professional." Early on Bentley painted exclusively in oils, quickly moved to acrylics, then made the switch to all digital media & creation by 2004. He traveled extensively during the 1990s and then returned to school in the early 2000s. Since 2000 the number of cons we have attended has decreased dramatically, and those attended often do not give out awards. Several are missing attribution (we failed to keep track of exactly which piece won), especially early on during the 1990s when Bentley began.
NASFiC is the North American Science Fiction Convention and occurs when the annual World Science Fiction Convention (Worldcon) is held over seas. Worldcon is famous for hosting both the Hugo Awards and the ASFA (Association of Science Fiction and Fantasy Artists) Chesley Awards.

    Judge’s Choice Award

    The Award-winning "Skycourse Rivalry"
Chicon 7 (The 70th World Science Fiction Convention); Judge’s Choice Award (one of 7 ) for Skycource Rivalry.

This piece was done for an ebook, Rivalry on a Sky Course: A Davi Rhii Story by Bryan Thomas Schmidt. It was not originally intended to be a large piece. The book is a prequel to Bryan's popular The Worker Prince, for which I also did the cover.

The 20"x30" original digital monoprint on canvas, sold at the show. I was told it was purchased by the Convention Chair. I consider this award a milestone in my career.
ASFA Chesley Award Nomination - Best Cover Illustration, Paperback Category
Bentley's piece Remember the Alamo Horror, the cover for Jean A. Stuntz's The Alamo and Zombies, published by Yard Dog Press, was nominated for a Chesley Award in 2012. Though it did not win, it was a finalist.
